Autumn Update

Dear Readers:

Every author should have such an enthusiastic relative as I have in my sister-in-law Karen, who recently answered my long overdue "Hi, how are you" phone greeting with "Do you have a new book out yet?"

I had to tell her I don't - but did add that I have a fall harvest of freelance ready to read all at once.

First up, the September 1 edition of Golf World celebrated its second annual fiction issue with stories by nine authors including Richard Ford, Pete Dexter, Roland Merullo, Elinor Lipman, Leigh Montville and me. My short story is titled "The Pro," which is the polar opposite of what I am as a golfer.

The latest edition of Yankee magazine includes a feature I wrote earlier this year on actress Karen Allen, best known for playing Indy's girlfriend in the first of the Indiana Jones films. She's still acting, but now also designs and knits sweaters she sells from a small boutique Great Barrington, a town in the Berkshires of Massachusetts.

Pick up The Bark magazine this month and you'll find an essay I wrote about those of us dog lovers who just can't help but pat the pups we pass while away on business or vacation. I'm traveling right now and the place where I'm staying - Hostel Obispo in San Luis Obispo, California - includes resident doggie Chloe, and I'm loving the chance to play ball with her while I'm missing my Tiny.

Finally, float over to the latest issue of New England Watershed magazine for a feature I wrote about the Connecticut River Valley's Polish-American farming heritage, something I try to continue - with flower gardens, at least - in my backyard.

Big thanks to all these magazines for including my work in their publications - and to you for reading.
